Vibe Coding, Explained: What It Is, Where It Shines, and Where It Bites

Vibe coding means building software by describing what you want in plain language and letting AI write the code. Here's what it really is, why it exploded in 2026, when it works brilliantly, and the traps that catch people who lean on it too hard.

In early 2025, the researcher Andrej Karpathy described a way of working that he only half-jokingly called "vibe coding": you stop reading every line, you talk to the AI in plain English, you accept its suggestions, and you steer by feel rather than by inspecting the code. The phrase stuck. By 2026 it had become one of the most talked-about, and most misunderstood, ideas in software.

So let's be precise about what vibe coding actually is, why it took off, and, just as importantly, where it quietly lets you down.

What vibe coding actually is

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want in natural language and letting an AI generate the code, while you guide the process through conversation instead of writing most of the code yourself.

You describe a feature. The AI writes it. You run it, see what happens, and describe the next change: "make the button bigger", "now save this to a database", "it crashes when the list is empty, fix that". You're directing, not typing. The "vibe" is that you're steering by the feel of the result rather than by carefully reading each line.

It sits at the end of a spectrum:

  • Autocomplete (Copilot-style): the AI finishes your lines while you drive.
  • AI-assisted coding: you and the AI collaborate, and you read and understand everything.
  • Vibe coding: the AI drives, and you accept output largely on trust and testing.

That last step, accepting code you haven't fully read, is what makes vibe coding both powerful and risky.

Why it exploded in 2026

Three things came together:

  1. Models got genuinely good at code. Frontier models can now hold an entire small project in context, write across many files, and fix their own bugs when you paste in the error.
  2. The tools caught up. AI-native editors like Cursor, and agentic tools that can run commands and edit files themselves, turned "chat about code" into "chat is the code".
  3. It's intoxicatingly fast. You can go from an idea to a working prototype in an afternoon, with no boilerplate and no fighting the setup. For anyone who's ever wanted to build something but stalled on the first hour of configuration, that's magic.

Where vibe coding genuinely shines

Used in the right places, it's not a gimmick, it's a real accelerant:

  • Prototypes and demos. When the goal is to see the idea working, not to maintain it for five years, speed is everything and correctness can be loose.
  • Learning by doing. Beginners can build something real on day one, then peel back the layers to understand how it works. Motivation first, theory second.
  • Personal tools and scripts. The one-off script to rename 500 files or scrape a page you own. Low stakes, high convenience.
  • Getting unstuck. Even experienced engineers use it to blast through unfamiliar APIs or generate a first draft they'll then refine.

Where it bites

Here's the part the hype skips, and it's the part that matters most if you want to build a career, not just a weekend demo.

  • You can't debug what you don't understand. Vibe coding is wonderful until it breaks. When the AI can't fix a bug and you never understood the code, you're stuck with no mental model to fall back on. Understanding is the thing that lets you recover when the vibes run out.
  • Security is a real casualty. AI-generated code frequently ships with hardcoded secrets, missing input validation, and insecure defaults. If you don't read it, you don't catch it, and "it worked in the demo" is exactly how vulnerable apps reach production.
  • It doesn't scale to real systems. A 200-line prototype is one thing. A codebase with many modules, real users, and years of maintenance needs architecture, tests, and consistency that pure vibe coding does not produce.
  • The 70% problem. AI gets you to a working-ish version astonishingly fast, then the last 30%, the edge cases, the polish, the reliability, is slow, and it's precisely the part that needs real engineering skill.

The honest verdict

Vibe coding is a fantastic tool and a dangerous identity. Treat it as a mode you switch into deliberately, for prototypes, for learning, for low-stakes scripts, and you'll ship faster and enjoy it. Treat it as a replacement for understanding how software works, and it will quietly cap how far you can go.

The most valuable engineers in 2026 aren't the ones who refuse AI, nor the ones who blindly accept whatever it writes. They're the ones who can vibe when it's the right call and read the code when it counts. They use the AI to move fast, and they understand enough to know when the fast path is about to drive off a cliff.

That judgement, knowing what the code is doing and why, is exactly what turns "I made a thing with AI" into "I can build software". It's what we teach, and it's the skill that keeps paying off no matter how good the models get. Learn the fundamentals alongside the AI, not instead of it, and vibe coding becomes a superpower rather than a crutch.
